Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide bacteriostatic antibiotic.
sulfamethoxazole is most often used as part of a synergistic combination with trimethoprim in a 5:1 ratio in co-trimoxazole (abbreviated SXT, SMX-TMP and SMZ-TMP,[7] or TMP-SMX and TMP-SMZ), also known under trade names such as Bactrim, Septrin, or Septra.
Function:
1.It is primarily used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, although it may be used against any susceptible aerobic bacterial species.
2.It may also be used to treat and prevent Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia.
3.It is generally not recommended for the treatment of anaerobic infections such as Clostridium difficile colitis (the leading cause of antibiotic-induced diarrhea).
4.Trimethoprim has been used in trials to treat retinitis.
5.Resistance to trimethoprim is increasing, but it is still a first line antibiotic in many countries.
