Marigold flower belongs to compositae family and tagetes erecta. It is an annual herb and widely planted in Heilungjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Yunnan , etc.The marigold we used comes from Yunnan province. Based on the local situation of special soil environment and lighting condition , the local marigold have characteristics like growing fast,long flowering period ,high productive capacity and adequate quality.Thus, the steady supply of raw materials, high yield and reduction of cost can be guaranteed.

(1) For eye protection: Lutein can absorb blue light.  The sun's ultraviolet, blue light into eyes will produce a large number of free radicals, cause cataracts, macular degeneration and even cancer. The human's eye contains high level of lutein which can not be produced by human' bodies and which must be supplemented by intake of it. Studies show that intake of lutein will help slow the aging, degradation, disease occur of eyes and reduce the incidence of eye-diseases and protect the retina from light damage.

(2) Used as a pigment: Orange natural pigment is widely used in chicken feed and also in some food, but the scope is limited because they do not dissolve in water.

(3) Anti-oxidant: The latest studies show that lutein is helpful for the treatment of heart disease and may prevent arterial wall thickening.

Lutein And Zeaxanthin Supplements

Because of the apparent eye and cardiovascular benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin, many nutritional companies have added these carotenoids to their multiple vitamin formulas. Others have introduced special eye vitamins that are predominantly lutein and zeaxanthin supplements.

There currently is no Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) or Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for lutein or zeaxanthin, but some experts say you should ingest at least 6 milligrams (mg) of lutein per day for beneficial effects.

It remains unclear how much lutein and zeaxanthin is needed daily for adequate eye and vision protection. Also, it is unknown at this time whether supplements have the same effect as lutein and zeaxanthin obtained through food sources.

There are no known toxic side effects of taking too much lutein or zeaxanthin. In some cases, people who eat large amounts of carrots or yellow and green citrus fruits can develop a harmless yellowing of the skin called carotenemia. Though the appearance of the condition can be somewhat alarming and may be confused with jaundice, the yellow discoloration disappears by cutting back on consumption of these carotenoid-rich foods. (Carotenemia also can be associated with over-consumption of carotenoid-rich nutritional supplements.)
