Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride is an antibiotic in the tetracycline family. Oxytetracycline hydrochloride strongly inhibits gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride is a protein synthesis inhibitor that prevents aminoacil-TrNA from binding to complex ribosomal RNA. Oxytetracycline hydrochloride also has anti-HSV-1 activity.

It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and its antibacterial spectrum, antibacterial principle and application are basically the same as tetracycline. Many rickettsia, mycoplasma, chlamydia, spirochete, amoeba and some plasmodium parasites are also susceptible to this product. Enterococcus is resistant to it. Others such as actinomycetes, anthrax, listeria monocytogenes, clostridium, Nocardia, vibrio, Brucella, Campylobacter, Yersinia are sensitive to this product. This product has certain antibacterial activity to neisseria gonorrhoeae and meningococcus, but penicillin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae is also resistant to oxytetracycline. Due to the extensive application of tetracycline over the years, oxytetracycline resistance of common clinical pathogens is serious, including gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus and most gram-negative bacteria. There is cross-resistance among different varieties of tetracycline antibiotics. The mechanism of action of this product is that the drug can specifically bind to the A position of 30S subunit of bacterial ribosome, inhibit the growth of peptide chain and affect the synthesis of bacterial protein. It is slightly more effective than tetracycline in treating intestinal infections, including amoebic dysentery. There is close cross-resistance with tetracycline.
