Histidine is an α-amino acid with a chemical formula of C6H9N3O2 and a molecular weight of 155. Histidine was first isolated in 1896 by the German physicist Abrich Kossel.
In the field of nutrition, histidine is considered an essential amino acid for humans, mainly for children. In adulthood, humans begin to synthesize histidine by themselves. Adding a small amount of histidine to the diet of patients with chronic uremia increases the rate of amino acid binding into hemoglobin and reduces nephrogenic anemia, so histidine is also an essential amino acid for patients with uremia. Under the action of histidine decarboxylase, histidine is decarboxylated to form histamine. Histamine has a strong vasodilator effect and is associated with various allergies and inflammations. In addition, histamine stimulates pepsin and stomach acid.
